This Alabama at Texas Pick and Prediction is a bold one.
Alabama and Texas face off in a Basketball game at Frank Erwin Arena and it is between two teams that need a win over a major conference school. Alabama comes at 4-2 and off a blowout victory at Coleman Coliseum against Charleston Southern. Texas hosts the Crimson Tide and sports a 3-3 record after falling to UT-Arlington 72-61 proving that they are not the best Men’s Basketball team in the University of Texas system.
Alabama is still grinding it out, this is a team that will not make anyone #BuckleUp at all. However, this is a team that does not have to lie about their identity, defense comes first and the shame that comes with a merely above-average offense and a style of play that is not exciting is unfounded. Avery Johnson’s team is in a state of change as the keys have been handed over to Braxton Key and Dazon Ingram. Shannon Hale and Jimmie Taylor have taken on closer to supporting roles, but this is not a team that has any true offensive standouts.
Dazon Ingram is performing very well in the Point Guard role for Avery Johnson and the blessings of depth on this team are evident. Rebounding is by-committee for this team, but they are not a strong offensive rebounding team, which means less opportunities to score second chance points. Not surprising is their ability to grab defensive rebounds. Last season, they were soft on the glass. This season, they have been committed to stopping possessions after one shot or less.
Alabama is forcing turnovers very effectively and not turning the ball over much. They are controlling the tempo and playing a pace that they like, even if it is not the pace that is advertised by Avery Johnson. Alabama is 322nd in the Ken Pomeroy adjusted tempo metric, which means that they are a slow paced team.
Alabama is an above average three point shooting team and their three point shooting defense is weak thus far.
Shaka Smart’s team lacks depth and experienced talent that have played well.
Tevin Mack is leading this team in scoring and there is no clear distributor on the team. Jarrett Allen is the leading presence in the middle and he is the leader of this team at getting to the Free Throw Line. He’s terrible at the line and so is Tevin Mack.
Texas is very adept at stopping ball movement and they blitz the passing lanes to force turnovers in the half court.
They are not adept at three point shooting, passing to each other and rebounding.
Texas will not foul much and they do a very good job on the perimeter with shooters. However, Texas is awful at three point shooting and they let opponents get off more Field Goal Attempts and that is a product of defensive rebounding woes.
Texas does not turn it over much, but they really do not force the number of turnovers expected from a Shaka Smart coached team. This is a slow paced team that really has not adopted the Havoc style as thought when Smart arrived in Austin.
Alabama at Texas Prediction and Pick
Alabama will have more composure than the Longhorns tonight and they greater depth and talent. Texas has the home court environment and perimeter defense. Alabama does not need to rely on threes to win. This is a defensive struggle, but Alabama’s ability to rebound, force turnovers and avoid committing turnovers gives them the edge.
In fact, Texas’ struggles are so bad right now that even though they are 3.5 point favorites, they will not win tonight. Alabama is the better team and they prove it in front of a tame, burnt orange audience.
Prediction: Alabama 66 Texas 60 (Pick: Alabama Moneyline +155)
Pick of the Day is 12-9 this season after covering with Pacific last night.
