Betting Picks for 12/5/2016
There was no Pick of the Day so to make up for it, the 12-11 record will be carried into a special Monday full of intriguing games and the picks that will count on the Pick of the Day ledger.
Cal State Northridge at St. John’s
St. John’s is not a good team and even though they are playing at Carnasecca Arena tonight, it may not make much of a difference. Delaware State was the last visitor and they were a heavy underdog, they pulled off the monumental upset and celebrated down Union Turnpike. Jamaica, Queens has not seen so many happy people cruising past Parsons Boulevard in a looooong time.
St. John’s is defined by their three point shooting capability, they take a lot of threes.
If St. John’s shoots extremely well from the outside, they win and if they do not, they lose. It is that simple.
Cal State Northridge is a terrible defensive team that plays extremely fast and can score a lot of points. They shoot threes well and let opponents shoot threes well too.
Their opponents do not take a lot of threes and their games devolve into Free Throw shooting contests. The total line was bet down significantly, whatever. This game is going to be filled with points. Both teams play very fast and this one is going OVER.
Not only that Cal State Northridge should cover this spread too.
Prediction: St. John’s 92 Cal State Northridge 83 (OVER 161.5 and CSUN +12.5)
UConn-Syracuse at Madison Square Garden
Carnasecca Arena is a 15 minute ride down to Jamaica Station and take the LIRR to Penn Station, which is directly below Madison Square Garden because that’s the location of the next game that will be picked.
UConn is without Terry Larrier, Alterique Gilbert and Mamadou Diarra. This is a team that is not strong at distributing the ball and they are not exactly good against the zone.
Consider this, they lost to Oregon in Maui by 10. Oregon plays mostly 2-3 Zone and they are very good at it, they are not Syracuse good at the 2-3 Zone though. Syracuse plays 2-3 Zone all game and it is their identity. They are long and they are excellent at denying opportunities to get the ball into offensive players in the holes of the zone.
Syracuse plays zone and opponents still struggle from three point range.
Syracuse should win by double digits in this one. UConn’s backcourt is not as good or disciplined as South Carolina’s or Wisconsin’s. UConn’s defense is not as good either. Long night for Kevin Ollie.
Prediction: Syracuse 71 UConn 53 (Pick: Syracuse -8.5)
UNO at Iowa State
UNO knocked off Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and Iowa State has dropped their last two games to Cincinnati at Hilton Coliseum and Gonzaga at Walt Disney World. UNO and Iowa State are both known for high tempo and lots of offense. This is going to be a scoring fest. The last time Iowa State faced an opponent that emphasized a crazy pace of play, it was against the Citadel and the score ended up being an absolute farce.
Opponents that let Iowa State play at a ridiculously fast pace are a part of a very high scoring game. UNO is not a slouch opponent so they will keep up with the Cyclones unlike The Citadel and Savannah State. This game will be a high scoring affair in Ames.
Prediction: Iowa State 98 UNO 82 (Pick: Over 160.5)
